
I/O Boards for Control and Instrumentation
Whether it be graphics, Ethernet, digital inputs, analog outputs, motor controllers or instruments such as multimeters
or oscilloscopes – it is the I/O interfaces that allows a computer to communicate with the outer world and adapts it
for the special tasks of an application.
To be able to supply the user with a complete system solution, MEN offers far more than 100 I/O functions from
workstation I/O up to exotic industrial functions. These are either integrated on the CPU board, located on dedicated
cards, or programmable in FPGA.
For flexible, modular expansion of the functionality of a computer system I/O functions based on mezzanines are often
the best solution. Mezzanine modules are small plug-on boards that can be used in VMEbus, CompactPCI
®
or stand-
alone systems. M-Modules™, PMC and PC-MIP
®
are ANSI mezzanine standards with worldwide acceptance. While
PCI-based modules like PMC and PC-MIP
®
are ideal for computer I/O (graphics, Ethernet, serial interfaces, fieldbusses),
M-Modules™ are better suited for industrial functions like analog/digital I/O, fieldbus interfaces and I/O for robotics,
motion and instrumentation.
All of the cards are at least screened for an ambient operation temperature of -40 to +85°C (Tx), and many of
them can even be produced with components in the respective temperature range. All the boards have passed the
necessary shock and vibration tests in MEN‘s in-house lab and are prepared for coating against humidity, dust, salt fog
or chemicals. For coating of boards with BGA components (Ball Grid Arrays), MEN has developed and tested a special
technique for underfilling of BGAs together with a renowned environmental laboratory.
