CAN Bus Interface in FPGA
Every MEN card with on-board FPGA can be
confi gured with this CAN controller IP core
which is a 100% CAN bus implementation
based on the specifi cation of a CAN control-
ler of one of the leading chip manufacturers.
CAN Protocol Version 2.0A/B
– Standard and extended data frames
– 0..8 bytes data length
– Programmable bit rate up to 1 Mbit/s
Support of Remote Frames
5 receive buffers (FIFO scheme)
3 transmit buffers with prioritization
Maskable identifi er fi lter
Programmable loop-back mode
for self-test operation
Signaling and interrupt capabilities
for receiver/transmitter error states
Wishbone bus interface
The corresponding CAN bus line drivers are
either implemented directly on the board
or can be added by using an SA-Adapter™
mezzanine card.

CAN Bus Interface on
M-Module
M65 / PC-MIP
®
P5
The M65 supports two completely identi-
cal and independent channels, while the P5
supports one channel.
The physical layer is an isolated ISO high-
speed interface with up to 1 Mbit/s data
transfer rate. The host can load and update
the local rmware in RAM. Communication is
also done via shared SRAM and is supported
by window and pointer access mechanism.
The CANopen fi rmware consists of the Vector
Informatik protocol stack, which runs locally
and thus reduces the load on the host side.
The corresponding driver software for Win-
dows
®
, Linux, VxWorks
®
and QNX
®
comes
from MEN who also provides comprehensive
intelligent CAN Layer 2 software.

Profi bus Interface on
M-Module
M79
The M79 is a Pro bus DP slave interface with
an on-board CPU that handles communication
with the host CPU via shared DRAM. The com-
plete Profi bus protocol stack runs locally on the
M-Module™ with very reduced interaction of
the host CPU. The optically isolated interface
is supplied by an on-board DC/DC converter.
The output is short-circuit protected. The M79
comes with 512 KB of local Flash, 1 MB of local
SRAM and 16 KB dual-ported RAM.
Pro bus slave functionality comprises initializa-
tion and termination of slaves, additional status
information on output and input data as well
as security services such as DP applications
checked by a user watchdog or a protocol stack
monitored by the application.
The Profi bus rmware consists of the true
Softing protocol stack. The corresponding dri-
ver software comes from MEN and complies
with standard Softing tools.
