The PMC P518 and the PC-MIP
®
P18 come
with frame buffer functionality and are used
as extension cards for PCI-based systems. The
complete set of graphics instructions is realized
inside an FPGA, with the FPGA acting as a PCI
target. Using FPGA technology to implement
graphics in a system provides the advantage
of nearly unlimited availability.
The P518 is equipped with a DVI digital video
output connector. An LVDS TFT interface is
accessible via the on-board connector or the
rear-I/O connector. A 32-MB, 133-MHz SDRAM
is implemented as a local frame buffer. Multiple
display modes are confi gurable by updating a
con guration Flash. The graphics controller
video outputs are at panel signals. Conver-
sion to both VGA and DVI is done by separate
hardware.
P518 and P18 are designed in accordance
with EN 50155 (-40 to +85°C operation tem-
perature, no components on sockets, pre-
pared for conformal coating etc.)

In this application the electronics supports
both local and distributed network architec-
tures and is a part of a station management
system which acts as the interface between
the supervisory system and all other sub-
systems. Since it was a requirement to imple-
ment up to 25 serial interfaces on the same
CPU card, the three on-board M-Module™
slots can be used to provide the additional
COMs. With eight interfaces per M-Module
even a total of 28 serial lines per single-board
computer is possible. A total of 36 control
and data lines for the eight communication
channels per M-Module™ are available on a
space-saving 44-pin HD-Sub connector at the
front side of the board.
In some of the projects additional binary I/O
is required. In that case a second 6U card with
128 optically isolated binary inputs/outputs is
plugged into the VMEbus system.

Board F206
The F206 is a user-confi gurable UART board
realized by means of an FPGA. The FPGA is
loaded automatically after power-up from a
2-MB standard NOR Flash device. It is also
possible to access this Flash from the
CompactPCI
®
bus to update its contents.
Optionally also a 16-MB SDRAM and a Nios
®
soft-processor can be installed to comple-
ment the functions of the FPGA. This DRAM
can be used for example as a large buffer me-
mory for more complex protocols. The F206
is designed in accordance with EN 50155.
