Custom Infotainment System
Based on F14
As a typical installation example the compu-
ter for the passenger information system is
equipped with specifi c application software
that communicates primarily with the indivi-
dual displays in the passenger area of a train,
city rail or bus etc. and that is able to monitor
itself. The computer controls the passenger
displays and the remote-controlled activation
and deactivation of the display monitors via a
fi eldbus like CANopen or IBIS in a bus.
This fi eldbus may also be used to connect to
the train bus. A simple two-wire connection
like RS485 may be used to control LED dis-
plays, while TFT displays may be controlled
via DVI outputs.
Apart from displaying still pictures, text or
fi lm, the computer can also transmit multi-
media such as TV, video, DVD or radio pro-
grams. The on-board computer may also
control the automatic audio announcement
of stations (via AC‘97 or the new High Defi -
nition audio) and may coordinate the video
FPGA-based 3U CompactPCI
®
Slave Board F206N
Due to its multitude of directly accessible I/O
pins the F206N can be used as a universal
FPGA platform. With the Nios
®
II CPU inside
the FPGA, the F206N can for example act as
an intelligent slave on the CompactPCI
®
bus.
In any case the F206N supports a nearly end-
less range of applications.

Using the fl exibility of integrating I/O func-
tions in an FPGA is an innovative and cost-
saving way to meet the widely differing
requirements of a passenger information
system. Functions that are normally not part
of a standard PC system can be realized as IP
cores – such as CAN bus, MVB, IBIS, Ethernet,
HDLC, but also binary I/Os, intelligent coun-
ters etc.
cameras in the stations, which transmit pic-
tures to the driver‘s cabin online via wireless
LAN. The tasks of the complete information
system can then for example be extended
by integrating standard wireless commu-
nication interfaces such as GSM or GPS for
positioning.
All functions which are not part of the stan-
dard CompactPCI
®
components (F14, F601
etc.) can either be realized on FPGA-based
boards (F206N or others) and/or combined
with custom I/O boards.
Darkness…a few lights flash now and then… What about something new……high time for some entertainment.
