Typical Functions in FPGA
MEN provides on-board FPGAs for user-
defined I/O on a wide variety of computing
platforms. A part of the FPGA functions is
necessary for the general operability of the
board. Other functions extend the board‘s
I/O capabilities. MEN offers a continuously
growing pool of IP cores, such as:
Different graphics controllers, touch
Fieldbus interfaces like CAN, MVB
Various additional UARTs
Leaving behind traffic jams...

EN 50155 Requirements
One of the most critical requirements is a
guaranteed operational temperature between
-40 and +85°C. Many parts however can only
be screened because the component manu-
facturer often does not guarantee the Tx
temperature range according to EN 50155.
Since the functionality of many of these com-
ponents can now be programmed in FPGA,
there is only one part which must fulfill the
railway requirements and this is the FPGA
itself. FPGAs are specified with -40 to +85°C
operation temperature. As required by EN
50155 the FPGA is used only within the
specification range of the data sheet (which
forbids screening). It also conforms to EN,
CECC or IEC standards, is manufactured
according to ISO 9000 and a second source
is available.
Another important aspect is long-term avail-
ability. Many component manufacturers don‘t
make guarantees for long-term availability.
This makes it difficult or impossible for the
board manufacturer to support his product
on a long-term basis.
The advantage of FPGAs and their nearly un-
limited availability lies in the fact that – even
if the device migrates to the next generation
– the code remains unchanged. According to
EN 50155 the only rule says that customized
parts like FPGAs must be documented to
allow reproduction and that the documen-
tation and the source code must be handed
out to the customer.
Flexible and Future-Safe with FPGA Technology
FPGAs – Field Programmable Gate Arrays – allow perfect customization of the hardware at an attractive price even in
low quantites. With an FPGA device on a computer board it is possible to program parts of the I/O or even a complete
microcontroller needed for dedicated control tasks of a specific application without touching the board layout. FPGA
technology accelerates time-to-market and reduces project cost. The advantages of using FPGAs become even more
exciting in railway applications because...
